I bought Roofman today so I could screen it for Scarlett and see if she made the cut in our church scene. Unfortunately, she was too short to be seen next to me (and the person in front of her was a GIANT) so I photoshopped her in. I don’t think she will notice 😉 My face tells me this was probably close to hour 8 of hearing Uzo Aduba sing this song and trying to still enjoy it 🫠

What a night! If you’ve known me for any stretch of time, you’ll know @mariannerichmondwriter is one of my ALL TIME favorite children’s book authors, and a huge inspiration to me in my own writing journey.

Well guess who I got to meet with my girl Kendal last night?!? Marianne Richmond! The fabulous (and apparently my new social media content manager😉) Maghon Taylor hosted the event at her adorable shop @allshewrotenotes - and it was incredible.

I got to share a little about my writing with Marianne, hear about her story, inspiration, and process and left feeling so encouraged to continue to share the stories in my heart. AND I even brought along the 3 copies of I Believe in You I have for my kids (this is the book I give to teachers each year to sign for them so it’s full of people who believe in them), and Marianne was nice enough to personally sign each one of them.

Thank you to Marianne and Maghon for such a wonderful, unforgettable night!

I’m not sure who my son thinks I am but he asked me to show the @nyislanders his valentine box! He is North Carolina’s biggest Islander fan and he got to visit @ubsarena for the first time in December and was obsessed 💙 so he asked me to make a whole box dedicated to the game and of course his favorite player Mat Barzal @barzal97 scoring the final goal in the game. Let’s see if we can get it to them - or maybe @officialpatrickroy can do him a favor and show the team since his moms a die hard Avs fan 😉

This is the hardest thing about parenting a child with SM - watching her anxiety take over and the fun, talkative and silliness inside her disappear. It’s heartbreaking to watch and wish people could see the Lucy we see.

6 years later and some people have seen her talkative side and I’m so grateful, but we still have a long way to go. If you ever get the chance to interact and love a child with SM - don’t give up on them. There is so much inside waiting to come out 💙✨

Within a matter of weeks, we had an appointment with a group that specialized in SM. They started the moment we walked in, and made sure there was no expectation or demand that Lucy talk.
Then we went into a room full of toys to begin our evaluation. This was all a very long, multi-step, multi-appointment process. But it felt very relaxed and normal, not like a doctor's appointment or evaluation at all to Lucy.
We would start by casually talking, then the doctor would try some yes/no, forced choice questions. She would signal to me to move a little further away from Lucy. I'd go sit on the couch, or I'd go look for something in my purse - all "set ups" to make Lucy comfortable with me getting further and further away from her, and eventually out of the room. Then Dr. Sheila would ask me to go grab her something from the receptionist’s desk. I would step out and come back within a couple minutes. The next time it would be longer and longer until eventually she was playing by herself, and she was OK that I was gone. This process is called a "fade-in". Through these fade-ins with Dr. Sheila, Lucy received her official diagnosis of SM.
By August 2018, Lucy was enrolled in an intensive therapy camp called Courageous Kids Camp in Denver. This camp brought in children from all over the country struggling with SM.
During this camp they would do exposure therapy - cleverly disguised as games and activities - to help these children talk. One of Lucy’s favorites was conducting surveys. Lucy's job was to walk around with her camp counselor and ask the other kids if they liked dogs or cats better.
Lucy’s diagnosis and our time in camp became the catalyst in my journey of becoming a voice for Selective Mutism.
Since Lucy’s diagnosis, teachers at her school were able to recognize signs and symptoms of SM and give resources and help to children like Lucy.
It was then I realized that Selective Mutism might not be a “rare” condition as stated online, but rather, maybe it was severely underdiagnosed and more kids than we realize are silently suffering and need our help.

Here are 5 facts and myths from the @childmindinstitute and how they relate to Lucy’s story!
1. I did not know this was a common misconception until I went through parent training at SM camp. I was mortified that people may think this as there is absolutely no trauma or abuse in Lucy’s life. However, what I learned going through this training is that I may have been undiagnosed with SM. I wholeheartedly believe that this is genetic because this was also me as a child who was just labeled as “very shy”.
2. I can see how this can be a common misconception as the behaviors are similar. Lucy displays all these traits when she is experiencing anxiety, however they completely disappear when she is not. That is the major difference between SM and ASD.
3. Yes, they can grow out of it (I am proof) but not without consequences. I feel I missed out on a lot of experiences and social development because of my anxiety, and I have seen Lucy miss out on some too even as we were working to overcome it. Prior to diagnosis and treatment, she didn’t make a whole lot of friends and wasn’t invited to parties or playdates. Her anxiety has also kept her from some school events. There are major downsides to not seeking help and treatment as early as possible.
4. Prior to diagnosis and treatment, it’s easy to think Lucy had speech and learning delays because the teachers could not properly evaluate her. These children, Lucy included, are usually right on track with their peers in regard to speech and learning - they just need help to be able to show that sometimes.
5. Ask Lucy if she wants to have SM and she will tell you she absolutely does not. No child wants to be paralyzed in fear. Many times, Lucy has expressed her wishes to be “a talking kid” all the time. The ability to use their voice is uncontrollable in certain situations, which is why I sort of prefer the term “situational mutism” as it takes this misconception of choice out of it.

Lucy's diagnosis story was nothing short of a miracle to be honest. She was at her well visit, everything was pretty routine and then the doctor asked me if I had any concerns.

Originally, I didn’t but at the last second it popped into my head to bring up her “shyness” issue at school.

There is no doubt in my mind that God nudged me to bring this up because I brought it up to the exact person who would end up helping me.

The doctor began to push more about what I meant by “incredibly shy” and how long this was going on. When I told her things like we’d have to take her preschool assessments at home so they could see what she knew, or I filled in my own Mother’s Day poem she started to ask how long this had been going on.

I promptly told her – all year. Zero talking since August (it was then May).

Despite being one of my silliest and loudest kids at home – she said absolutely nothing at school.

Her eyes widened as she told me, that is definitely not shyness and in fact she just had a colleague whose son with diagnosed with something called Selective Mutism and she ran to go get the information from her.

She came back with a list of several therapists and child psychologists to contact immediately because she was almost certain this was what Lucy was suffering from. She explained she didn’t know much, as she had just learned about this disorder that very week, but essentially it was a type of severe social anxiety disorder.

My mind was spinning - I couldn't quite comprehend what was happening. I came in thinking my daughter was just shy and quiet at school to learning she might have a type of anxiety disorder?

We left and I sat in the parking lot and started to google this "Selective Mutism" term - it only took a few minutes of reading and I burst into tears.

This was Lucy.

Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder that prevents people from talking in certain situations - not all. My daughter was wild and crazy at home but at school she was completely silent, no facial expressions and was frozen in fear.

The biggest misconception about SM is that since this only happens in certain places or around certain people it "must be a choice". This is the furthest things from the truth. These children have absolutely zero control over it, it's their bodies fight or flight response to anxiety and I can guarantee if you ask any of them if they want to be like that, they will tell you no. Lucy would tell us all the time she "wishes she was a talking kid"

If you come across a child or other person who is struggling to talk or showing other symptoms of SM, the best thing you can do is to stop pressuring them to talk, still include them but decrease the need for them to talk and lessen that anxiety for them. Building rapport and a friendship with them is so beneficial in helping them feel comfortable and calm enough to start using their voice (oh and when they do - don't get too excited, act like it's perfectly normal. Having a big response to hearing them talk could shut them down again) 😉💙

Up until 6 years ago, October wasn't anything particularly special in our family. But now, I look forward to this month every year. Tomorrow is the start of Selective Mutism Awareness month. I like to use this time to share a little bit about my daughter's diagnosis as well as other information to educate others on this disorder. I hope my stories and information can help and encourage someone out there going through the same thing. If our story or posts can help other people not feel so alone or get the help they need for their child - it's all worth it!
Lucy Lemon and the Brave Bubbles was the first book I wrote, and it tells Lucy's story and journey with Selective Mutism. It’s paired with an activity book and a second book - Lucy Lemons Brave Bubble Pop! - to encourage children to talk by popping bubbles with Lucy! These books have been given to many local elementary and preschools to use as tools to help families and children on their SM journey. These books helped children at my daughter's school to better understand her, and it also helped Lucy feel more understood and not so alone. Kids now understand Lucy has this disorder and no longer take her silence as rejection. They just grab her by the hand and take her with them. She has so many friends now who just "get her" and love her for who she is and for that I am forever grateful.

If I had a quarter for everyone that either text me, called me or found me out and about to stop and tell me how much my posts about quitting competitive sports and just doing less striving in general resonated with them…I could buy a VENTI Starbucks. I realized after I posted it that I truly wasn’t alone, and I gave a bunch of moms permission to not feel guilty for not keeping up with it all and doing it all. It’s OK to say no to things that disrupt your peace and home life, its ok to participate (or not) in other things. Motherhood/life doesn’t have to be competitive – its ok to be in the rec leagues. What do I mean by the rec leagues? It’s not feeling like you have to compete with anyone or anything! It’s living life on your terms and not what people think you should be doing. Doing what works for you and not at the expense of your soul, your peace, or your family. This absolutely looks different for everyone. Some people thrive having things every night of the week – I did not, I know my limits. This isn’t a “settle for less” thing either – it’s a settle on what’s best for you. Let’s take the stigma out of being in the rec leagues – and look at it as a badge of honor.
I’m not trying to impress anyone. I’m not trying to win first place. I’m just here, enjoying the game and hoping both teams are having fun. I don’t want first place anything – I want the participation trophy. Because that’s what I’m doing: participating in my best life. My rec league looks like saying no anything that takes away too much time from my family and things that are important to us – leaving me stressed, angry and anxious.
Your rec league could be slowing down on sports.
Maybe it’s turning down a promotion or going part time.
It’s not all about saying no or doing less, it could mean participating more in things that matter most to you. This isn’t to say one way is better than the other, all I’m trying to say is make sure however you choose to live your life that it doesn’t cost you what really matters.
Life shouldn’t be about competing to be the best, we should all just be participating at our best.

I read a blog from a mom who decided they were going to miss their baseball game for a youth group night…because "a gold medal isn’t going to get my baby into heaven."
Talk about mind blown – and I felt that so deep in my soul. Do the titles we recieve or how much we did to get there really matter if it cost us our souls? Our peace? Our family?
Work accolades, head of the committee, trophies, titles truly won’t mean anything at the end of the day if it cost you everything else to get it.
Make time for eternal matters first, the rest, while still fun and valuable in their own regard, is just that – for fun.

TWO MORE DAYS!!

One of my favorite things about going back to acting is getting to share all the behind-the-scenes stuff with my kids.

If you have ever worked on a film, you know there is A LOT of down time. Between all the varying shots, resetting cameras/cast/etc. one scene can take all day long. During some of the breaks I'd facetime my kids and show them what I was up to and what a working film set looked like; sometimes other actors would pop their head in and wave to them.

My daughter loved seeing what a movie set looked like and laughed when I showed her my "set slippers" I was walking around in during breaks so my feet wouldn't hurt from the high heels I had on. There really is a great community of people you meet on film sets and it was extra fun to include my kids in it. The relationships I made on this set are some that will last forever; there is nothing like being surrounded and supported by other artists.

I loved the opportunity to show my kids it's never too late to follow your dreams...or get back to what you love.

I had the absolute pleasure of working on this film for a couple days and it changed my life. She stared out the window so I wouldn’t see the tears in her eye, but I heard the quiver in her voice…“I didn’t make the team.” My heart sank. “I don’t understand. I was trying really hard, and they said I was doing a good job!”I knew she worked hard for this. In my writer’s group, we have a tradition of sharing our rejection letters. Then everyone congratulates you and shares in the excitement that you are one step closer to finding your place. With that in mind, I blurted out - “That just means you are one step closer to finding the thing you are supposed to do!” She stared at me, confused. I continued to tell her this “no” doesn’t mean you failed, it just means God has something else out there for you that is bigger and better. These things are just the baby steps to get you to the main stage. You aren’t always going to get the first thing you set out to do. Each time you get up and brush yourself off and keep moving to where He called you is an act of faith, perseverance, and trust that in God’s time the right door will open for you. God put it on her heart to go out and try something new, and she bravely did. However, when He called her to this He did not say - “and I will make it easy for you.” Throughout the Bible God mentions there will be trials and suffering in this life BUT He also says, “I will be with you, I will never leave you or forsake you, and I will guide your steps.” Whether she wanted to believe it or not, this rejection was guiding her steps to where He wants her to be. Now the choice was hers. Was she going to let this rejection stop her in her tracks, or was she going to let this rejection guide her to the next thing so she could see what He has in store for her? (happy to report she chose the latter!) She doesn’t know what plans God has for her, but she knows He will be with her. And while this “no” hurts, its ok to be sad, and its ok to cry – this isn’t the end. God has something in store for her. He knows her heart. He knows that she is looking for a place to belong. And He knows exactly where that place is and will get her there. So – we are going to praise Him on the walk up to the main stage. And I can’t wait to watch her shine.

And while this “no” hurts, its ok to be sad, and its ok to cry – this isn’t the end. God has something in store for her. He knows her heart. He knows that she is looking for a place to belong. And He knows exactly where that place is and will get her there. So – we are going to praise Him on the walk up to the main stage. And I can’t wait to watch her shine.

Steps of faith toward your calling, even if it initially produces a “failure”, are never wrong. If you are going after something knowing that He has your best interest at heart and has a plan for you, nothing you do in faith in is vain – the result of your steps is either protection or direction on your path. Recently I’ve been entering what I'll call my unbothered era.

I’m unbothered by what others think of me – because I know what God thinks of me.

I’m unbothered by what the world tells me I need – because I know God gives me all that I need.

I’m unbothered if doors close or friendships end – because I know there is a reason and a season for everything. God hears and sees things I don’t; what feels like rejection, is always protection.

I’m unbothered by not having it all – because all my riches are in heaven.

I’m unbothered by the hustle culture and feeling like I need to do it all – because there is joy in simplicity.

There is a resounding peace that comes with being unbothered. And it’s not that I don’t care anymore, I think being unbothered has actually made me care MORE.

I care more about my peace, about my identity in Christ, and who I’m called to be – and I want to be that unapologetically.

Because I’m unbothered I swim like a 5-year-old in the pool.

Because I’m unbothered the “no” hurts less.

Because I’m unbothered I’m not wasting time banging on doors that no one will answer.

Because I’m unbothered I feel set free from the chains that once held me down.

I’m not going to waste my time asking why, feeling sorry for myself, or obsessing about what others have said (or may say) – I’m just going to live.

We get one life and to live it well you have to be unbothered.

If you want someone to know how much you mean to them, give them your time.

It’s arguably the most precious and valuable resource we have. We can’t make more of it, can’t buy more of it, we can't even get it back if we didn’t like how it was used.

It is also the greatest gift we can give our children.

The other week I took my son out for a one on one, quality time day. As big peach lovers, we decided to go peach picking at a local orchard together.

The day was full of him telling me all about what he built in Minecraft, letting me hear all the sound effects he could make, talking about his friends, hearing all the commentary he had about the orchard, the farm, and the cow that needed a haircut. It was magical honestly. I would sit there in awe and smile just listening to all the words he said with his raspy little voice.

As we were leaving, I asked what his favorite part of today was and he said, “everything with you”.

It wasn’t picking peaches, it wasn’t the giant slushie he got, it wasn’t petting a cow…it was me. It was TIME with me.

It doesn’t matter what you do, where you go, what you see – what matters most to them is doing it with you. Being with you. Spending time with you.

I encourage you today to give the gift of time to those precious hearts in your home.

Make it a priority.

The days seem long, but the years are short, and they only have one childhood.
But you also only have one motherhood. Make the most of your time.

Over the summer my mom and I would ride bikes almost every evening. One ride took us past the town cemetery, and I thought of someone I hadn’t honestly thought about in years – my friend, Natalie.
She died when I was 8; she was 10. We were in gymnastics together, and I could never beat her in a handstand contest, no one could. Her headstone is even engraved with “The Handstand Queen” – because she quite literally was.
Natalie was laid to rest in that cemetery 28 years ago. It made me think about all the life I’ve lived in 28 years and how hers stopped 28 years ago. Her 10 years of life are condensed into that little line between the dates that started and ended her life. That’s all she got. And that’s all we will be one day too – all the truly important things in your life are in that tiny line.
What are you doing with your time in the line? Would it make a difference if you knew your spot in line?
If you were close to the front, would you have regrets with how you spent your time? Would you rush to do more with the people you loved?
What if you found out you were far back in the line? Would you brush off doing the thing you want to do because “you have time”. You have time to fulfill your dream later, you have time to visit family later, you have time to *fill in the blank* later.
The thing about time is, it passes quicker than you think and once it’s gone you can’t get it back. Next thing you know, you’re at the front of the line looking back wondering what happened.
We don’t know where we are in the line. To be honest, I’ve lived a lot thinking I was somewhere in the back of the line, and I can “do those things later”.
What I should be doing is living like I’m close to the front of the line – next in line even. We need to stop pushing off things we want to do, dreams we have, making the phone call, and being exactly who God has made us to be. You are doing a huge disservice to your family, friends, community, and even the world by not being who God has called you to be and fulfilling your purpose.
I hope when my time in the line is over, I can hear those magical words, “Well done good and faithful servant”. Send a 💙 if you hope to hear that too!

I’m not a pool person. The only time I get in is when the NC heat is trying to kill me, even then I stay perched on my float because I am not about to submerge myself in that water.
Then one day a few weeks back, everything changed.
I took my son to the pool, he jumped in and started playing and I set up shop on a lounge chair. Quickly I noticed he was the only child at the pool and initially thought – well that’s nice – the whole place to yourself!
But after about 15 minutes he asked to go home. When I asked why, he said he was bored and had no one to play with.
Something in that moment stirred up in my soul and looking at the disappointment in his eyes broke my heart and I blurted out “I’ll play with you”. His eyes got as big as his head and he says, “will you get all the way in?”
Yeah buddy… I’m getting all the way in.
He cannonballed into the water and excitedly waited for me to make my entrance.
Moments later his sisters show up and we spend the next hour or so doing handstand contests, underwater flips and tea parties, cannonballs and dunking games. I hadn’t had that much fun at the pool in years. So much so I got on Amazon to order myself and my husband some goggles, so I didn’t have to steal them from the kids.
Truth be told, good or bad, these are the moments our kids will remember forever. They will remember mom sitting out at the pool as much as they remember mom beating them at handstand contests at the pool – it’s up to us to decide which memory we want them to have.
After this experience I want to encourage you to get all the way in. Their childhood is short but the memories last for a lifetime.
Maybe for your child they like to play on the trampoline – pee real quick, take a puff of your inhaler and go play crack the egg!
Maybe it’s video games – have them teach you to play, you won’t be a “noob” for too long!
You may even find something you didn’t know you would enjoy. For me, it was swimming with goggles (five stars, highly recommend).
Whatever it is…buy the goggles and get all the way in.

In a world of instant gratification, small (fruitless) beginnings are hard.

I’m willing to admit that I have a hard time with small beginnings and am guilty of giving up or procrastinating when those small beginnings feel like a waste of time.

Each time I leave, I feel God calling me back. It wasn’t until I heard this Bible verse in one of my training courses that it finally lit a fire in my soul.

God LOVES to see you begin the work – He REJOICES with each small step we take towards what He has called us to do.

In a world of instant gratification, small (fruitless) beginnings are hard.

I’m willing to admit that I have a hard time with small beginnings and am guilty of giving up or procrastinating when those small beginnings feel like a waste of time.

Each time I leave, I feel God calling me back. It wasn’t until I heard this Bible verse in one of my training courses that it finally lit a fire in my soul.

God LOVES to see you begin the work – He REJOICES with each small step we take towards what He has called us to do.
